What is Hard Water?

Bottled water can become costly, the plastic bottles overload our landfills and litter our cities' green spaces. Hard water is caused by dissolved minerals and sediments of calcium and magnesium; and is measured in grains per gallon(gpg). When combined with heat or soap, hard water becomes a problem for homeowners because it creates a formation of scale build-up all around your home and in your plumbing. Likewise, the soap your family uses reacts with hard water in such a way as to create soap scum, making your cleaning duties around the house that much harder. Soap scum can stain and discolor your fixtures, your fabrics come out of the washer not as bright and clean feeling, and your hair, skin, and nails are not as lusterous looking due to the left over soap scum lingering all around your home.

Measuring Hard Water

Soft: 0.6 to 3.6 gpg

Moderate: 3.6 to 7.0 gpg

Hard: 7.0 to 10.5 gpg

Very Hard: Greater than 10.5 gpg

Hard water presents itself in more visible ways all around your homel, from the build up on your shower heads and faucets, to the spots and stains on your dishes and shower walls. Hard water also poses other unseen threats that can become much larger problems, causing costly damages to your home's plumbing and water-utilizing appliances. By the same token, your whole home' s water flow may suffer from hard water when scale build up accumulates inside your home's plumbing, hampering the amount of water flow your home enjoys.

How Water Softeners Work

A water Softener is made up of three main components; a control valve, a pressure tank, and a salt tank:

Control Valve:

The control valve determines when regeneration is necessary, the direction of water flow, and the amount of time spent in each cycle.

Pressure Tank:

The pressure tank holds the resin that exchanges sodium for hardness minerals and is under the water line pressure.

Salt Tank:

The salt tank holds the salt that makes the brine solution used to regenerate the softening resin.

Water Softening Stages

The Science Behind Water Softening

A water softener works to remove hardness minerals through a process called ion exchange:

  1. Raw water runs through the bed of sodium charged softening resin contained in a pressure tank
  2. Hardness ions attach to the resin, exchanging with the harmless sodium ions
  3. Eventually the resin contains only hardness minerals and has to be regenerated
  4. The control valve monitors water usage and determines when to regenerate
  5. The resin is backwashed to rince away impurities
  6. A strong brine solution is then drawn through the bed of hardness ions and exchanged for sodium ions
  7. The hardness ions are then rinsed out to the drain
  8. The softener is once again ready to soften
